Let's talk about daycare.
What are your thoughts?
Here is what I think. And PLEASE don't take it personally.
I don't like it. When I have kids, I want to be a stay at home mom. I don't like the idea of someone else watching my child all day long at a place with 20 other kids who have colds and who knows what else. I don't like the idea of my child learning their first word there or them taking their first step there with me missing it. I do understand that some moms have to work to support the family- and that's ok. My mom works full time because my dad is on disability. But, she never worked while we were growing up. If we had a babysitter, it was someone in our ward or a family member. I just feel like some moms work just to be away from their kids and take their kids to daycare because they don't want to deal with them. But- do they realize that by the time they pay the money to the daycare, they really aren't making much.
Don't get me wrong- I think it's ok to work, but I think there are other ways to take care of your children than daycare. If you live by family, have them watch your kids for a bit. If not, make a trade with a friend or neighbor and then you won't loose any money. Most people are fine to watch a few extra kids- especially if they already have kids their age that they could play with.
I just think daycare is a waste of money.
What do you think?

I guess I wouldn't mind daycare so much if I were my child's teacher. I worked in daycares since I was 18 up until I was 23. Those kids, I feel so bad for them especially the ones that have to stay there for the full 12 hours the day cares are open.
ReplyDeleteI think day care is fine when you're using it for preschool or just a couple hours to get interactions with other kids, but for the whole day, longer than a typical work day - poor kids! Those kids are so hurt that they have to be there the whole time and they start clinging more to their daycare teachers than their parents because they see their teachers more.
My MIL runs a daycare, but it's more like a total learning environment. She's always taking them out, going to some enriching activity instead of just being stuck inside one place. So maybe more private daycares would be better too plus she's only open 7:30-5 unlike other daycares that are open 6-6.
In Dave Ramsey's book, The Total Money Makeover - he said it usually costs more to live on a double income and send your kids to daycare.
If it must be done, I prefer a small in-home day care setting to one of those larger businesses. It's what's enabled me to stay home with my kids these last couple of years until my youngest starts first grade. We have gotten really close to the kids we tend and their families. But, ideally, every mom would be able to stay home and nurture their children themselves.
ReplyDeleteI think I mostly have a thing against the big companies. I don't think there is anything wrong with having a few kids in your home to watch and have it be the so called "daycare". I just hate the companies that are in it just for the money- and they just put out toys and don't interact with their kids.
